Social Groups and their Representations
Through Films, we all see how certain social groups are represented like Age, Gender, Sexuality, Class and Status, Race and Ethnicity, Ability and Disability and so on.
For Example, Age is a social group represented in many ways. Like there are many Youth-Oriented films. These films normally highlight the chaos and uncertainty of adolescence.
On the other hand, there are senior-focused films where there are mellow tones, nostalgic scores and slower paced editing. These films emphasize the challenges and wisdom that come with age.
Another Social Group that is very important is Gender. This is probably the most controversial social group. Firstly, there are Female-led films which show women as a strong character, the colors are normally feminine. These films establish a sense of independence for women. Wonder Woman is an example of these type of films. These films challenge traditional gender roles.
Then there are the Male-dominated films which are normally Action- packed sequences, rugged landscapes, and deep, dramatic soundtracks reinforce masculinity. These films often prioritize Male superiority.
In the recent times, another Social group has gained some attention, which is Sexuality.
These films often talk about homosexuality and it's impact on society. The Western World has always tried to promote these LGBTQ+ perspectives through Films including authentic character portrayals and sensitive lighting. These films emphasize on normalizing queer experiences
Anti- homosexuality films try to bring back what was normal. They try to counter homosexuality with normal human behaviour. The Valid points they have are that homosexuality is prohibited in most of the religions and if someone is homosexual they are fighting with their religion. These emphasize that true love is always just between a man and a woman.
Then there comes Class and Status where luxury status is shown of the people who are wealthy. Extravagant soundtracks opulent settings, high-end fashion display wealth and excess.
Then come the representation of the working class and how they struggle. Gritty realism, industrial soundscapes, and handheld camera work convey hardship and resilience. They highlight economic disparities.
Then come the representation of Race and Ethnicity. There are films which feature underrepresented groups where there is cultural immersion, traditional music and vibrant colors. These films promote representation and inclusivity. There are Mainstream films where Tokenism or stereotypical portrayals often reduce characters to simplistic or exoticized roles.
Ability and Disability is a very sensitive topic and there are films which represent how disabled people are disrespected by the society.
Disabled people are shown overcoming adversity narratives often perpetuated inspirational yet patronizing portrayals. But there are films which promote understanding where there are authentic portrayals, accessible settings and sensitive storytelling. These films humanize disability.
These representations lead to broader appeal, improved cultural understanding, enhanced authenticity. But misrepresentation can perpetuate stereotypes, marginalization and exclusion.
As the film industry evolves, films will continue to reflect and shape societal attitudes.
